Description
A Bakeneko clay relief, handmade in warm gold, depicting the supernatural cat of Japanese folklore in close portrait, shrine towers and incense smoke pressed into the background behind it.
The cat fills the composition, fur and features rendered in fine layered relief, wide eyes and a stillness that reads as both domestic and deeply unsettling. The warm gold finish gives the piece a ceremonial quality, sitting well against the spiritual architecture receding behind the figure. At 20x20cm it displays well on a shelf or ledge without requiring fixings.
In Japanese folklore, the Bakeneko is a cat that has lived long enough to gain supernatural powers, often haunting shrine grounds and mountain temples, balanced between familiar companion and sacred guardian.
An original handmade clay sculpture, one of a kind, 20x20cm.
