Description
A Basin Ghost clay demon mask, handmade in dark grey, depicting a heavily asymmetrical yokai face, a single hollow eye dominating the upper form, jaw dropped and teeth exposed below a surface of deep carved channels and layered striations.
The hand-built construction is deliberately raw, tool marks, tonal variation and pronounced surface texture left intentional throughout. The dark grey finish shifts under directional light, the carved channels reading differently depending on the angle, giving the piece a restless, unsettled quality. It displays well hung on a wall or rested against a surface without requiring permanent fixings.
In Japanese folklore, basin and water spirits occupy thresholds between the domestic and the unknown, their distorted features reflecting the uncanny rather than the monstrous. This piece sits in that tradition, the asymmetry and single eye suggesting something observed rather than something attacking.
An original handmade clay sculpture, one of a kind.
Material: Air-dry clay, sealed with Liquitex Matte Medium Care: Keep dry. Avoid direct sunlight and temperature extremes. Decorative only.
