Description
An Ember Skull clay demon mask, handmade in terracotta, depicting a wide demonic face with multiple eyes, small horns and an open jaw on the front, the reverse hollowed and carved with a detailed anatomical skull.
The front face is expressive and asymmetric, circular eyes at varying heights giving the piece an unsettled, watchful quality, the warm terracotta clay left largely unfinished to emphasise surface texture and hand-built form. The reverse skull is signed by the artist and rewards closer inspection, the two faces together reading as a single object that shifts meaning depending on which side faces outward. It displays well hung on a wall or rested against a surface without requiring permanent fixings.
In Japanese yokai folklore, skull imagery carries associations with mortality and transformation, the demonic face and the death’s head occupying opposite ends of the same supernatural tradition. This piece makes that relationship explicit by placing both on a single object.
