Description
An Iwa-Zura clay demon mask, handmade in white, depicting a distorted, rock-like face with bulging forms, sunken eyes and a surface worked entirely by hand into organic deformation.
There is no smooth finish here — tool marks, surface irregularities and tonal variation across the white clay are integral to the piece, shifting visibly under different lighting conditions. The mask reads differently from every angle, the irregular forms catching and losing shadow as the light moves. It displays well hung on a wall or rested against a surface without requiring permanent fixings.
In Japanese folklore, Iwa-Zura describes a creature of stone-like countenance, its distorted features representing the boundary between the human form and something older and less defined. This piece leans into that ambiguity, the face recognisable but fundamentally wrong.
