Description
A Nio Guardian clay relief, handmade in grey, depicting the guardian in close portrait, brow furrowed, jaw set, swirling energy patterns framing the face and shoulders across the slab’s surface.
The figure is carved with muscular tension throughout, deep relief picking out the folds of the brow, the set of the jaw and the spiralling forms that press in from the edges. The cool grey finish suits the severity of the expression, the raw clay texture reading as worn stone, consistent with the temple carvings this figure traditionally inhabits. At 10x10cm it suits a desk, narrow shelf or window ledge without requiring fixings.
The Nio are wrathful guardian deities placed at the entrance of Buddhist temples to ward off evil spirits, their fierce expressions a deliberate deterrent rather than a sign of malice. This piece captures that protective fury at close range.
An original handmade clay sculpture, one of a kind, 10x10cm.
