Description
An Ocean Demon yokai mask handmade in terracotta, depicting a horned sea demon, broad-faced and heavily textured, with perforated relief sections across the muzzle and brow and multiple horn protrusions rising from the skull.
The piece is hand-built throughout, tool marks and surface variation intentional rather than incidental, the terracotta finish showing natural tonal shifts and edge wear under directional light. The hollowed eye sockets and perforated muzzle give the face a raw, skeletal quality despite its mass. It displays well hung on a wall or rested against a surface without requiring permanent fixings.
In Japanese folklore, ocean demons occupy the boundary between the human world and the deep, figures of tidal violence and unknowable intent. This mask captures that presence through bulk and texture rather than detail, the face more force than feature.
An original handmade clay sculpture, one of a kind.
