Description
This is an original, one-of-a-kind clay relief sculpture created in 2025 by artist Owen Prescott. The work depicts a Japanese yokai figure rendered in high detail, drawing upon themes of mythology, folklore, and fantasy.
Medium & Technique:
Material: Air-dry clay slab, 20 × 20 × 1.5 cm (not exact)
Technique: Relief pressing and hand finishing, with surface textures enhanced by hand-painting to emphasise depth and shadow
Format: Freestanding slab suitable for display on stand or framing in a shadow box
Artistic Context:
The piece references Japanese mythological tradition while interpreting the yokai form through a contemporary lens. Relief as a medium allows for a tactile, sculptural presence while maintaining the clarity of line and detail associated with printmaking. Each incision and surface treatment was developed to capture both the ferocity and symbolic resonance of the subject.
