Description
A Yurei clay relief, handmade in silver and gold, depicting a ghostly figure seated low within a dense garden setting, moss, foliage and architectural fragments pressing in around her from all sides.
Unlike the more confrontational pieces in the series, this composition is receding rather than forward-facing, the figure small within her surroundings, almost absorbed by them. The silver and gold finish gives the overgrown surface a damp, luminous quality, the gold catching across the raised foliage and the silver settling into the figure and shadowed ground below. At 10x10cm it suits a desk, narrow shelf or window ledge without requiring fixings.
In Japanese folklore, the Yurei is a spirit held from a peaceful afterlife by unresolved emotion, resentment, sorrow or longing, traditionally depicted as a woman in white, translucent and without feet. This piece shows her not haunting but waiting.
An original handmade clay sculpture, one of a kind, 10x10cm.
