RECESS Coin [RCS T01] – Handmade Clay, Terracotta, Limited Edition, 27mm

Description

RECESS is a handmade clay coin in Terracotta, built around a single large concentric depression that draws the eye inward from the coin’s edge to a small seal relief at the centre.

The front is defined by what has been removed rather than added – the pressed ring sits low against the outer clay, its walls cracked and darkened where the material compressed and dried, giving the surface the quality of parched ground pulling away from itself. At the base of the depression, the hanko seal relief is small and precise, its curved and striated forms contrasting with the roughness of the surrounding clay. The reverse carries the Japanese artist mark pressed into a cleaner terracotta ground, the surface smoother and less worked than the front, the mark sitting off-centre with natural clay variation across the field.
