Description
A Vortex Ghost yokai mask handmade in grey clay, depicting a demon face layered with spiralling eye forms, each bulbous and hollow, distributed across the entire surface of the skull.
The hand-painted graphic markings cover the lower face and chin in dense, repeating symbol work, contrasting with the sculptural three-dimensionality of the eye forms above. The grey finish shifts in tone across the raised and recessed surfaces, the tonal variation intentional and responsive to lighting conditions. It displays well hung on a wall or rested against a surface without requiring permanent fixings.
In Japanese folklore, multi-eyed spirits and demons represent an all-seeing supernatural awareness, creatures that perceive what ordinary beings cannot. The Vortex Ghost takes that tradition into unsettling territory, the proliferation of eyes suggesting not clarity but an overwhelming, inescapable gaze.
