Description
“He emerges from the forgotten corners of the home, a guardian of the hearth who demands only a bit of attention and a great deal of respect. His wide eyes see every hidden desire, and his grin promises a fortune that can vanish as quickly as it appeared.”
The Zashiki-warashi is a protective spirit said to inhabit well-maintained houses, often appearing as a child to bring great wealth and luck to the inhabitants. This relief captures a more chaotic interpretation of the spirit, showing it clambering out of a traditional tansu chest with sharp claws and an unsettlingly wide smile, symbolizing the unpredictable nature of luck and the spirits that reside in the mundane spaces of our lives.
